Chancellor Nies on Move-In Day 2024

Hello UMD Alumni community!

It’s been three months since I started in my new role as Chancellor at the University of Minnesota Duluth, and I couldn't be more excited to have begun the semester. It’s one of my favorite times of the year. I loved helping with move-in for our new and returning students, and you can watch what it was like to be on campus in this video–I imagine it might remind you a bit of when you first came to UMD.

Returning to my home state has brought back so many memories from my time growing up here–filled with discovery, curiosity, wonder and awe. And I recognize that same spirit here at UMD. I imagine your connection with your alma mater might feel similar–memories that I hope fill you with pride and perhaps nostalgia.

Since day one, I’ve been listening to stories and learning about the amazing work of UMD that has had a positive impact on our students, community, region and state. I look forward to continuing to learn about UMD’s rich history, and working with everyone toward a bold vision for our future. In partnership with new U of M System President Rebecca Cunningham, we will continue to help shape higher education’s future, as well as do the great work that contributes to the state of Minnesota and beyond. As you saw in our last newsletter, part of that new vision is our emphasis on the qualities that make UMD such an amazing place, with a focus on student success; discovery, innovation, and impact; public engagement; and community and belonging.

Thank you for your role in that as a Bulldog alum. You are an important part of what makes UMD so special and your impact on this institution remains indelible. If we haven’t already, I hope to have the chance to meet you at an upcoming event on campus and beyond, or at Homecoming in September.

I’m so thrilled to be a Bulldog! I look forward to continuing to build on the legacy that you and your fellow Bulldogs have laid before us.

Thank you for your ongoing dedication to UMD.

Go ‘Dogs!
